Too soon for Spring Allergy Precautions?

The ground is still crunchy with frost and all of the plants and trees that infuriated your allergies are dormant.  Why worry about this spring’s allergies so soon?  The reason is simple—if you want an edge on your symptoms this season, it’s time to start working on your game plan.

1.    Talk to an Allergist

In general, most mild allergies are addressed by primary care physicians.  Though your doctor may not know what the exact cause of your allergies is, he or she can prescribe medications to help alleviate your symptoms.  This method of treatment is purely defensive—by seeing an allergist you can switch your approach to one that includes a strong offensive as well.  Allergists are doctors who specialize in the treatment of allergies and the two most important aspects to making an appointment with one is twofold:

  • An Allergist can conduct tests to pinpoint the exact allergen that sets off your symptoms.  This is better help you to avoid contact (which is the #1 of reducing symptoms) and understand when it is best to take medications.
  • An Allergist will help you determine the latest or most effective treatment of your allergies.

2.    Immunology

Now is the time to see if you are a candidate for immunotherapy, or allergy shots.  Allergy shots are the single, long-term hope for those suffering with allergic diseases.  A series of shots are administered over 3-year period of time—each shot contains a tiny dose of an allergen—to stimulate your immune system.  Over time, your body no longer views the allergen as a threat and your allergic reactions lessen in frequency and severity.

Though monthly shots may not seem all that fun, in the long run it might just be a very worthwhile investment.  And  the sooner you get started, the sooner you will see a decrease in your allergy symptoms.

3.    Air Purifiers.

One method for avoiding contact with allergens is using an air purifier.  A machine that uses a HEPA filter typically is best for people with allergies or asthma, as they are the only type approved by allergists.  It is advisable to research and purchase an air purifier before spring weather delivers a dose of allergens.  Air purifiers like those made by IQ Air are build with allergy and asthma sufferers in mind and also have been rated as a “best buy” by Consumer Reports.  For smaller areas the IQ Air Health Pro Compact is ideal for removing allergens before they can trigger symptoms.
