Unfortunately, schools are a place where it is VERY easy to catch colds and other illnesses from other students and teachers. Put a few hundred or thousand students in the same building with many who are sick and you are bound to catch something.

As for the sick building syndrome, that is tough to say without some air quality testing. And unfortunately, that requires cost and approval of the school board. Take note of the attendance records - see whether or not there is a high incidence of absence. Talk to the school nurse and see what they notice.

If it's normal colds and flue, there may not be much to worry about. If there are a high rate of respiratory issues, you may wish to approach the school board.

Hope this helps.

I teach in a public high school and have already been sick three times since school opened the week before Labor Day. Last year, I remember students and staff being sick at the same time, just as soon as we returned to school.

My classroom for the past 2 years is directly across from the nurse's office. I thought I would mention this in the event you think that could be a trigger.

Aside from all of this, could our school be a sick building?

Thank you.
