How Do Antihistamines Work for Allergies?

As part of an allergy treatment, many patients are prescribed antihistamines.  So what exactly can a little pill do to keep your symptoms from flaring?  This video shows exactly how the antihistamines interupt the allergic reaction and spare you from feeling it's full effects.

In addition to other allergy and asthma treatments (like allergy shots, air purifiers and inhalers), antihistamines can improve your quality of life in spite of how many allergens are floating in the air around you.  Sometimes the over the counter antihistamines can cause drowsiness - this is partially because of the cheaper ingredients they contain.  Prescription allergy medications often do not cause as much drowsiness - and now, many pills that used to be presciptives and now available in over-the-counter form.  Just be sure to check with your doctor before you take any medications.
